Geoffrey Capes, Great Britain was disqualified after being involved in a scuffle with a Czechoslovakian official. His disqualification sparked a protest walk-off by other shot put competitors. They eventually returned after officials said they would cancel the event.
The incident happened at the roll call for the competitors. Capes was wearing only one identification number. The rules state an athlete must wear two. An official troed to pin a second number on Capes, and in the ensuing scuffle, one of the officials was knocked to the ground. Capes was imediately ordered off the field.
Yevgeniy Mironov, Soviet Union was forced to return his silver medal after failing steroid test.
