Carl Lewis would have been an outstanding favourite after winning the 1983 US title with a near world record 19.75. He opted out of this event, but the United States still claimed gold and silver. This was despite the early elimination of Myricks, nursing a hamstring injury. The final saw Calvin Smith go one better than his 100m silver with an easy win. Running from lane 3, he came into the straight with Emmelmann. As the GDR runner faded, so Smith forged ahead taking with him Quow. Mennea ou tdipped Wells for the bronze.
