The gold medal again went to a German but it was not defending champion Schult nor former world record holder Schmidt. It was a 24 yearold who was competing at his first senior championship final. Riedel was the best of the qualifiers and he went even further in the first round of the final with 66.20. The conditions were not ideal for long throws and it became obvious that this throw might well hold up for victory.
Horváth held second place until the last round, when an ecstatic de Bruin moved up from fourth spot with 65.82.
